Writing prompts that work
A simple structure for clearer, more useful answers.
A useful structure is role, task, context, format, check.
Example: "You're helping a care worker apply for a team-leader role (role). Draft a 150-word cover letter opening (task). I have 4 years' experience and have trained new starters (context). Use plain British English in two short paragraphs (format). List anything you've assumed (check)."
- Give real context. Vague prompts get generic answers.
- Ask it to list assumptions and questions.
- Iterate: "shorter", "more formal", "give three options".
