Jobs and AI
Customer service and call centre staff
Telephone sales tops the UK list for exposure to chatbot-style AI.
How to read this page. No source gives a reliable "risk score" for individual UK jobs, so we don't invent one. We summarise what named studies say. The Department for Education's report measures exposure to AI (how far AI could touch the abilities a job uses), not whether jobs will be lost or helped, and it says its results "should be interpreted with caution". Read the sources and make up your own mind.
What the evidence says
DfE (2023) ranks telephone salespersons 1st for exposure to large language models.
Annex 2 of the DfE report draws on International Labour Organization (ILO) research and names call and contact centre occupations among the UK jobs where AI could substitute, not just support, the work.
What it means in practice
Our summary, based on the sources above. It's general guidance, not a prediction.
- Simple, scripted enquiries are increasingly handled by chatbots and voice bots.
- Complex complaints, vulnerable customers and sales relationships still need people.
- Routes out or up: team leading, quality and training, customer success, CRM administration.
