Jobs and AI
Drivers and logistics
Driving and warehouse roles are among the least exposed to language AI, and delivery work is expected to grow.
How to read this page. No source gives a reliable "risk score" for individual UK jobs, so we don't invent one. We summarise what named studies say. The Department for Education's report measures exposure to AI (how far AI could touch the abilities a job uses), not whether jobs will be lost or helped, and it says its results "should be interpreted with caution". Read the sources and make up your own mind.
What the evidence says
DfE (2023) lists fork-lift truck drivers 1st and large goods vehicle drivers 12th among the occupations least exposed to large language models.
WEF Future of Jobs 2025 names delivery drivers among the roles with the largest expected growth, and autonomous and electric vehicle specialists among the fastest-growing.
What it means in practice
Our summary, based on the sources above. It's general guidance, not a prediction.
- Route planning and tracking are already software-led. The driving and handling remain human for now.
- HGV Skills Bootcamps exist for new and returning drivers (Skills for Careers).
- EV and autonomous-vehicle skills are a growing specialism.
